Soaking or sauna?
Let's head for current soaking content firsat, revealed and/or published recently.

Worldthermalsprings, has been all over southwestern Europe earlier this year, with visiting the then still to be opened Nancy Thermal. From their Facebook page (Mar. 29) and translated:
'Travelling along the thermals in Eastern France. Nancy Thermal had an open house today and anyone could walk into the restored thermal baths and new pools. World class thermals! This is what France was missing! Congratulations to everyone who created this thermal complex and who will work there!
Another (imminent) opening of, this of Paliano as announced by Il Messaggero (Apr. 19). Translated:
'The Paliano thermal baths finally see the light: to begin with, it will be a structure that will make up for the closures of Bagnaccio and Masse di San Sisto'.
Armenia Travel (Apr. 22) with it's Top 5 hot springs of the nation.

MindfullexperiencesGreece has their overview (Apr. 19) of Greek soaks. Maybe just an updated article.
'There are around 700 natural hot springs all over Greece. Of these, 84 are known to have healing properties'.
Blog23b.de has a blog on mostly Greek hot springs (n=21) and the odd one from the Azores, Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. All from the last 3 years, very up-to-date. Marks are given: examples of near full marks: Eleftheron, Thermopilae and Rupite with near excellent credentials. There's also a 1.5 out of 10 attributed to Geoagiu-Băi in Romania. From the latter:
'Nothing to bathe really, Roman baths are nice to look at'.
One of the former:
'Loutra Eleftheron, Thrace, Greece: Clear perfectly hot water pools with in a remote location surrounded by nature? For free? Come on… – bert'.

Mandate
The recent sauna news is much more. Suppose if commercial interests are foremost, then it's to be expected.

The Well Norways most expansive wellness resort seems to have (invited?) a number of English speaking journo's along.
South China Morning Post (Apr. 1) possibly jokes. How the article hits off:
'It feels rather odd to be packing a suitcase for a weekend spa break – and deliberately leaving out a swimsuit.
At least, for some it is strange. For European spa-goers hailing from Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium and France, as well as Swedes, Finns, Japanese and Turks, going completely naked in a public spa is entirely acceptable. In many bathhouses, it is mandatory'.
Then the Daily Mail also report (Apr. 7):
'We’re men and women of all shapes, all sizes, all ages — and all starkers. A lithe woman (clad in swimsuit and sarong) is dancing around the sauna, artistically waving a towel to spread the heat and scent from the coals.
Her wahey is in sharp contrast to how I’m feeling. I’ve always hated my body (my mother put me on my first diet aged eight — which pretty much wrecked my body image). So it’s no wonder I approach my visit to The Well, just outside Oslo in Norway, with trepidation.
The Well is the largest spa in northern Europe — sprawling over 10,500 sq m with 13 pools, 15 saunas and steam rooms, and 140 showers.
...
Eventually — albeit slowly — I come to embrace the naked thing. You realise people do, indeed, come in all shapes and sizes; that nobody cares how you look except you. And yes, swimming naked does feel wonderfully liberating'.
madeleinelovesthis (from The Well):
These photos accurately represent the sheer euphoria of ditching my clothes and inhibitions in one fell swoop and walking nude - in broad daylight - into an icy pool.
Granted, I am generally quite game for all manner of forays in the name of feeling more vital, more resilient, less like my body has been dragged through yet another soggy British winter complete with attendant colds and covid.
Nonetheless, being schooled in England and having been handed a lifetime’s worth of thoughts about my body courtesy of, y’know, other people/attitudes/assumptions/adverts/etc. and, well, no wonder both @shireendd.stylist and I unanimously felt that before stripping off and joining everyone else in nudity @thewellspahotel, it was worth detailing the things we considered ‘wrong’ with our bodies.
Aside from the delicious freedom of just going for it, we both found that within around five minutes starkers, it really wasn’t a big deal. Just bodies. Some smaller. Some bigger. Some softer. Some harder. Some more lumpy. Some more smooth. But just homes of flesh. Truly truly truly liberating. That said, pick your companion wisely to do it alongside; we both lucked out in that regard.
P.s. I zoomed in and I don’t think anything is visible but apologies if it is.
P.p.s. Photos are of course not allowed in the spa areas for obvious reasons - these were taken during a private tour.
P.p.p.s. I’m a guest of The Well - but posting here isn’t a stipulation of my stay.
Other Norwegian excerpts.
Sauna Times (Apr. 7) has the news on floating saunas, a fad increasingly becoming popular in the Scandinavian countries so says they:
'Typing the words “floating sauna” into the search bar on visitnorway.com returns us a dazzling list of 68 beautiful floating sauna options, from city harbor to deep nature fjords'.
Sauna Channel with another vdo (Jul. 22, 2022), this time from the Lofoten isles, northern Norway:

Dated on the same day, there's another sauna vdo posted from the Lofoten.

The Dailymail (again) reports (Apr. 20) on one man's love for Swedish saunas:
'I've recently moved to Sweden with my wife and two children so I'm new to the country, the culture and the phenomenon of winter bathing. The first time I cycled to the beach in the freezing cold and wandered up the pier with a towel, flip-flops and zero swimming trunks in my backpack I was more motivated by having a funny story to tell about those 'crazy Swedes'. What I've found is a health-improving, mood-enhancing high from nature's very own supply.
...
The health benefits are clear, but for me a few psychological wins have also crept up.
One in particular is the rather liberating realisation that the human body is so very weird. Scratch from your mind almost every crafted and curated image you've ever seen on your phone. We are all lumpy and oddly shaped. Some people have hair in places others don't. Some people have broad powerful shoulders but really weird-looking feet. Some people have no shoulders to speak of but incredible jawlines - and for all people it simply does not matter'.
Holland's Blootgewoon has announced it's national awards, amongst them that of the best sauna. The (excellent) Spaone has won for the second year running the title: spa of the year.

An American couple get to enjoy a Dutch wellness resort. And make an vdo on this (Mar. 25):

They compare with their experiences from Germany, with the single (Fort Beemster Wellness resort) Dutch experience. The luxury of the Netherlands with the everyday sauna experience in Germany? Hmmm, the Fort Beemster resort is regarded as one of the best in the Netherlands (Google: 4.6 stars), so possible basing you experience of this with what I suppose are many others in Germany might not be fair. The article garners 100+ comments, most explaining where else a good Dutch sauna experience can be had.

What's with Germany and it's love of rules?
From Germany's TV channel Kabeleins a pointer (May 5) as to how to navigate the German sauna:
'Heiß, heißer, Sauna. Die Deutschen lieben Saunieren. Doch gibt es einige ungeschriebene Regeln, an die man sich halten sollte: Wie viel Abstand hält man zu den anderen und wie viel Gucken ist eigentlich erlaubt? Abenteuer Leben beantwortet diese Fragen'.
Beninwanderland (Mar. 9) shares that culture shock of 1. heading to the sauna for the first time and 2. doing so in Germany:
'The concept of baring it all, with no clothes to hide behind, might seem strange to most, but it is part of the German culture that has been embraced by locals and tourists alike.
As a writer, I sought to experience this concept by visiting a reputable sauna during winter in Berlin. My journey taught me a lot about nudity and etiquette, revelations I'll share with you.
...
Today, nudity is widely accepted in many areas of German society, including beaches, parks, and saunas. It is seen as a natural and healthy expression of the human body, and there is no shame or embarrassment associated with being naked in public.
However, this cultural attitude is not universal in Germany and may vary depending on the region or individual. And Germans also place a strong emphasis on etiquette and respect for others when it comes to public nudity. For example, it is considered rude to stare or make inappropriate comments towards others who are naked.
This attitude is in contrast to that which Australian society has adopted, the country of my childhood and adolescence'.
The lessons learnt:
'I have learned a valuable lesson on nudity during my sauna visit in Berlin. Being comfortable with our body should not be a privilege withheld for certain people or societies. Non-sexual nudity around others, especially those of the same gender, is about having a healthy attitude towards body image.
Although I don’t condone brazen acts of nudity performed in unsuitable social settings, I feel people should be comfortable enough within their skin to be naked around others.
Ultimately, whether we’re tall, short, thin, fat, hairy or bald, we are all born in like manner - without clothing. Anatomically, within either gender, our architecture is the same.
Embrace your body and liberate it by visiting a sauna in Berlin (or elsewhere in the world)!
Worldofsauna looks (Mar. 28) at Spanish sauna culture:
'When I started researching the Spanish sauna culture, I was laughed at and told that the Spanish don’t take saunas.
...
So I found out that Spain has a long spa culture. Spanish people are especially familiar with Turkish saunas or hamams.
The Spanish do not take saunas as often as the Finns or have as many saunas as the Finns. At least not yet'.
The sharing concerns just one experience and that at an hotel.

Finally, another country, another TV channel. Denmark's TV2OstJylland reports (Mar. 28) on a sauna "battle" in Silkeborg. Translated:
'A meeting of the Culture, Leisure, Outdoor and Sports Committee in Silkeborg Municipality on Monday evening resulted in the city council politicians slamming their hands on the table and terminating the agreement with the sauna club Almind-Wellet.
It comes after several weeks of trouble about whether it should be allowed to use swimwear in the sauna or not.
The sauna club, led by chairman Freddy Skovbo, has fought for a swimwear ban, but that battle has been lost.
In any case, a majority in the Culture, Recreation, Outdoor and Sports Committee has now decided to terminate the user agreement with the association'.

Starting off this round of photos, France (above and following).

Not always are springs hot. Or cold.

Above warm while following is a salt spring from Germany which would be best described as cold.

Challenge
I really challenged my fear of water at this place! I went soaking in the hot springs several times, even when it was dark, and even naked on my last day!
This was my first time experiencing hot springs. It's so amazing with pools of natural hot water! And since it was cold outside, it was really nice to be able to take a warm bath! 😍 A warm bath is not something that happens everyday when living vanlife!

A couple of lesser known springs from Italy (both above), while Iceland has a lot of hot springs on offer for just standing around (following).

One of the coolest things about Iceland is the accessibility to hot springs and geothermal swimming holes, many of them fixed up and maintained by locals.
This pool is tucked away in a lush valley and only reachable by a short, beeeeeautiful hike.
Many of these pools are located on private property, but free for public use (because Icelanders are cool like that).
This is one of the most enjoyable delights of Icelandic culture.
When in Iceland.

Another quick spin of the continent.
Above Greece, following Bulgaria and then Hungary.
The latter is very interesting as the photographer seems to know quite a few secret soaks. And also knows how to keep them.

Wild hot springs in Rupite ⛲, right next to the place where lived famous Bulgarian mystic, clairvoyant and herbalist Baba Vanga 👁️. It's located on a volcano crater 🌋 and according to Vanga the whole area is filled with cosmic energy 🪐 The temperature of the mineral water of Rupite is 76 degrees C. It contains sulfates and hydrocarbonates of sodium and calcium, fluorine, and silicon. It's perfect for tired muscles after a mountain hike 👌

Then we were in France.
Above an old favourite, below an interesting addition from the departement of Herault where the photo is of a 21°C luke warmish source.

The only thing more relaxing than a hot spring with my family is a hot spring without my family! 😆 I got out of bed uncharacteristically early to enjoy this peace totally alone 💙💙💙
Especially during pandemic times but also... always, it’s hard to get time to think as a van parent and making time to be alone occasionally is super important.
Hope my fellow van parents have found ways to stay sane this year (tips welcome) 🙏 xoxo

Mountains and more

is this place even real ✨✨✨
In this posting, I'm trying to present a couple of recent photo's I've come across which present a mountainous picture. Or if not, at the very least something that conjures up a mountainous scene (picture lots of mist). Hopefully with little or no leaves; it's afterall a bleak picture at the moment here on the northern half of our planet. The rest maybe enjoying the sunshine. But big secret. It won't last.

Anyroad.
Seasons greetings? Or not. Above a recent photo of Austria's Maibachl, a seasonal hot spring (end of spring) but apparently flowing well again, now in December.

Hiked up to the secret hotsprings of @flims_switzerland
Continuing the Alpine theme, the above mentions hot springs of Flims. There's precious little substance to this claim; though there are many therme's nearby claiming thermal water sources. Maybe in this case the hot spring should translate as not freezing? Anyone familiar with the set up here?

Below are a more common wild therme, situated near Bormio, Italy.

This was probably the coolest hot top spot I have been to! DM me the coolest hot springs you have been to! I need new adventure!😊
And if you haven’t seen the last vlog from here. Link in my bio!

Prime contender

Prominent beyond mention (in soaking sense) is the little town of Loutra Aidipsos (Edipsou / Edipsos) on the Greek island of Evia (Euboea) which is regarded as one of the nations premier hot spring resorts.

With this reputation comes a tad of tackiness: there's little the town can endear itself except a plethora of hot spring related / tourist business.
And there's a lot of this, tripadvisor alone refers you to more than 100 accommodation options. Add to that a plethora of rental apartments.
And you'll have to conclude that soaking is a way of life in Aidipsos.

Mint
And why is soaking so popular?

One aspect would be it's vicinity to Athens. In a way it's far away from the capital yet not so poorly accessible especially figuring in the ferry after which it's just a 1,5 hours car drive to Athens.

Ferrying to the mainland, just half an hour but a step back from the hustle and bustle.

Then the number of hot springs themselves: 80 of Greece's 752 hot springs are located in Aidipsos according to wikipedia. Which is lot. So a lot of choice. Many are also on the seaside, so what better than have a peaceful holiday on the beach and soak at the same time?
And with the visitor having a choice of where to stay and what soak to enjoy comes a distinctive turn away from the general Greek (Mediterranean?) penchant for medicinal soaking shunning the fun.

Then there's the historic edge. Matt has this:
'Edipsos is not a new phenomenon. Even though few travelers from other countries have never heard of  it the cosmopolitan atmosphere combined with the healing spas have attracted reknown politicians, artists, writers and other notable people like Winston Churchill, Aristotle Onnasis, Maria Callas, Greta Garbo and Omar Sharif. But it is mentioned in the works of Aristotle in his Meteorological, and by Ploutarch and Strabon. The town even minted its own coins. In Roman times the area flourished and its healing waters were visited by the emperors Hadrian, Septimus Severus and Marcus Aurilius. The baths from the Roman period are the best preserved and are known as Syllas Baths. During the Byzantine era it was destroyed for being an area of paganism though it was visited by the Emperors Theodosious and Constantine the Great'.
So well connected thus, historically speaking.

Disorder
It's quite obvious that soaking has always been an attraction here. And still is.

Tripadvisor rates Aidopsos soaks with 4 stars (based on 55 reviews), mostly an average review from a diverse range of nationalities.
Tripadvisor also ranks the hot springs as the number 5 of things to do on Evia island, itself the second largest island of Greece.

But let's look at more detail into the springs themselves. This website notes:
The hot springs of Edipsos are known since the ancient times. In the archaeological collection of the city, the visitor has the opportunity to see important ancient baths remains dating from the Hellenistic and Roman period. A large modern complex of hydrotherapy, including steam baths and Jacuzzi, operates in Edipsos. It has an outdoor Olympic-sized pool which waters come both from the hot springs and from the sea, as well as two indoor pools of thermal water. The hydrotherapy center does not have a hotel. Hence, the visitor must book their rooms in a lodging option in the area. These waters are said to treat acute and chronic rheumatism, arthritis deformities, espondilartritis, neuritis, sciatica, lumbago and injuries caused by ankylosis, gynecological disorders (salpingitis, endometrial infections, ovaries disorders, leucorreas and even some forms of infertility). Then there's this link:
'Edipsos is located at the green Northern part of Evia and is one of those unique places in Greece, where one can combine Natural Traditional Therapy, the latest in Thermal Spring Therapy with the beaches and atmosphere of a Greek island, the cosmopolitan atmosphere combined with the healing spas. There are more than 80 individual hot-water-springs ranging from 28 – 86 degrees centigrade, that can be very effective in curing problems like rheumatoid and inflammatory arthritis, spondylo- arthritis, tendonitis and many more'.
It's quite odd that most internet sites out there solely focus on attracting  the tourist; there seems little first-hand experiences.

Findings

We spent two nights in Aidipsos. I had banked on there being free and easily available seaside soaks, that much I had gleamed from internet.

We arrived late the first day, spending a bit of time finding our digs even though the town plan seems very much straight forward (three long lanes running parallel to the long side of the beach cut through by small crossroads often).

Along the beach itself is the main drag, mostly restaurants, not much to choose between.

After dinner we move further to the cape, rounding it which passes the entry to the apparent gem of Loutra Aidipsos: the Thermae Sylla Spa & Wellness Hotel (photo below). It's regarded by some as one of the worlds premier spas (source):
'... one of the top 10 natural spas in the world, as voted by the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller [CNT] magazine'.
one of the top 10 natural spas in the world, as voted by the prestigious Conde Nast Traveller magazine - See more at: http://greece.greekreporter.com/2015/08/28/revitalize-yourself-in-greeces-hottest-spa-resort-in-edipsos-on-euboea-island/#sthash.RZUgkixU.dpuf
It actually was ranked fifth in 2011 in the Readers Awards of CNT category Medical, Thermal and Natural Spas.

Continuing: the road follows the cape and just beyond the hotel the beach gives way to 5-10m high cliffs. This would be where the soaks should be, but it seems in the closing of the day pretty much deserted (which in itself is a good sign for natural soaking) but also slightly eery. After the first cliff there's a bathing building which has been closed altogether and certainly has seen better times. There's precious little to soak in, just a trickle here and there.

Surprisingly there's a building a block back on whose ground seems to give rise to many a hot spring. We circle the building the wrong way, around the back the going gets difficult in the dark. All very strange, back in the light of street we can follow an overflow along a bathing building (closed) and the waters disappear underground.

How odd all. Are the springs all siphoned off for hotels? Even though there are not so many tourists (probably even less than there are soaks).

Changes
The next morning we learn. The grounds on which the springs spring belong to the National Tourist Organisation.

We must have missed the cave behind the building. Belonging to Sylla, wikivoyage has this:
'One of the surviving findings of the Roman period are the baths in "Cave of Sulla." The "cave" Sulla is a small building with a dome. The entire building is covered by deposits of sulfur waters that flow in the area and gives the impression of a cave entrance. At the entrance of the "cave" are two massive pedestals of statues with inscriptions in honor of the Roman Emperor Hadrian and Septimius Severus dedicated by the municipality Istieas. The first bear and later inscription in honor of Emperor Constantine of Byzantium. The "cave" was associated with the Roman general Sulla, who was visiting the spa treatment'.
Around the corner the bathing building is noted as the
'... old spa of St. Anargyroi, a neoclassical architectural jewel gracing with his presence and reminds times when the resort of Edipsos dominated the Mediterranean'.
We do a similar swirl of town as the evening before.
First it seems things have changed. Hot and sulphorous reeking water is flowing over the rocks  east of Sylla Spa. Has the tap been turned on (or off somewhere else?).

Strange, but we conclude that the waters are hot and salty. Unfortunately the tide is in, so there are no appropriate pools to soak in: either boiling hot. Or cold.

Continuing onwards and today's discovery does certainly point to more waters as all along this shore waters are running over rocks and small culverts to sea. But nothing to really soak in. The famous sea based shower doesn't seem to be running either, so we leave it for today, not really over excited and look for a great alternative for today.

Looking back to the cape. The first cliff with a building on top, is what appears to be a shower (sometimes). The yellowish cliff has a couple of pools and in between are the deserted bathing facilities.

Dip
Is there anything else to Loutar Aidipsos?

Well, the town's beaches are mediocre at best. Head over and beyond the bay for better or head along the south coast for more attractive settings.

There are also a hot spring nearby at Loutra Gialtron.

Head inland for some great scenery, some walks (I hope) but also visit the great Drimona waterfall (below), way up in the mountains. Very deserted on our visit it afforded us with delicious dip.
