Growth

Italy, this entries mainstay.

Within the forest of Sasso Pisano lies another hot spring. Once a simple washhouse, it has been transformed into a unique bath. The spring has kept its rustic charm, creating a moody athmosphere. The water flowing directly from the pipe was a around 40 degrees Celsius, however, the tub itself with its clear water was around 10 degrees colder, creating a perfect balance. It was a truly magical experience, bathing in the forest on the last day of the year.

Danke @bagno_popolare 💙
Starting off this line up from Switzerland.
The above is especially topical. From the town of Baden where besides the free baths, there's now crowd funding action whereby the initiators are seeking to buy an apartment bottom floor with baths and hot spring sources: Rabenbaden.
Then to the southern side of the Alps and another mountainous hot spring from France.

Treasures

Heading now south and southeast wards, nothing special just some photo's worth sharing.

It can be hard to know what parts of our trip to share or not share but this place was a real treasure. It's cascading waterfalls of hot springs by an old stone mill house. They are the most perfect temperature of any hot springs we've ever been to. They're free and open 24/7. Wanting to avoid crowds, we chose to go at night... And had the place to ourselves! There were maybe three other people there, in another part of the springs so there was not another soul in sight as we enjoyed the water and the stars.. Lilly found her first constellations and shooting stars. While setting down towels on the shore when we arrived, I looked up to see the girls wading in together, holding hands. ♥️

Conundrum

A start to this post without knowing where it will end.

I like to think this blog is all about conserving the few wild, natural and free hot springs left in Europe. Sharing concerned info wider should result in increasing awareness which should result in more conservation.

For a variety of reasons, a couple of European hot springs have escaped the development conundrum of the last centuries and have remained freely accessible, mostly undisturbed and havens for soakers and soaking spirits who value community and nature. A pity yes, as soaking has overwhelmingly been viewed on as a commercial opportunity.

But the past few years have seen some these last havens coming even under more threat. And it's not from development.

A variety of reasons can be appropriated.
More easily accessible info, lack of other avenues of entertainment (think Covid-19), increased escapism, erosion of societal control, overall growth of population and their associated economic wealth and increasing social polarisation (just to name a few) have all resulted in increased natural hot spring consumerism, more unbridled hedonism and increasingly an attitude of been here, done that, sod the rest.
Surprisingly, these reasons are not valid for many of the developed hot springs.

The increased usage of natural soaks has resulted in a backlash from authorities.

Respect
Some recent examples of this backlash:
This Tuscan hot spring is increasingly being turned into a uncontrolled hot spring theme park. Recent Tripadvisor reports:
'There are visible signs of dis-respect to this awesome site. Lots of garbage and cigarette butt everywhere. Crowded and no control of any sort. This is bad.
...
First of all I have to underline the fact that for free Thermal baths, the water is not so bad. And you also have free parking.
For all the rest: people and place I would say a big No NO. Is an open free space for everybody including animals that go inside the water. When I went, it was also full of drunk and strange people, I would not recommend this place for a solo visit or family with children'.
InToscane (Apr. 21) with how authorities respond. Translated:
'... or the first time , access to the Cascate del Mulino di Saturnia, one of the most beautiful free open-air spas in Italy, will be regulated to protect this incredible naturalistic area'.
Responsible attitude? Really? Glass? gabs_goe:
Definitely one of the best places we went to in Italy ✨

Bitter
Concerning a very popular hot spring in southern France, this has gained national notoriety. Franceblue (Jan. 17). Translated:
'“We have been dispossessed!” Dozens of inhabitants of [...], in the Pyrénées-Orientales, cry out their anger and bitterness, evoking their lost paradise.
Traffic problems on the small mountainous road blocking access to other communities, squatting leading to unsanitary situations are the most serious situations'.
As recent as last September, authorities were dealing with the evolving situation. L'Independent (9 Aug.) translated:
'This weekend, some holidaymakers must have been surprised when they went to retrieve their vehicles after tasting the pleasures of the warm waters of Prats-Balaguer. Indeed fines of 135 euros and impoundments followed one another on Friday and last Saturday. "We regularly carry out control patrols but this time it was a large-scale operation", explains Commander Le Bouic, in charge of the Prades gendarmerie company. "A known situation in Prats-Balaguer with an overcrowding which has arrived gradually", according to Dominique Fossat, sub-prefect of the district of Prades.
"The situation gradually worsened with in particular access to the hamlet regularly blocked for residents, public services and even firefighters.
...
"In the short term, I will advise visitors to park further away if there is no space and to favor soft modes of traffic. We will continue to be particularly severe with offenders, warns Dominique Fossat. In the medium term, the idea is to create dedicated parking spaces and to completely prohibit parking along the departmental road. In the longer term, the project would be a land acquisition by the community in order to permanently secure the premises ".

Clearly not all is well in this soaking paradise.

When did it became normal for dogs to soak? blauontheroad:
I've been craving for this ever since I left Taiwan, where campsites near hotsprings where my second home.
Graciaaas Mon por el foton.
Sinners
Over to Spain. In Andalucia another hot spring is fenced off alltogether.

Tierrassinfronteras (Mar. 29 2021):
'News
Important! It seems that they have cut off access to this natural space because it is located on a private estate. We do not know how long this circumstance will last. We invite you to stay informed in the comments of this article, at the bottom of the page.
Problems
As we have said before, these thermal pools in the middle of nature are a spectacular and magical place, but not all that glitters is gold.
The main problem we have found is the dirt that dominates the area. Wraps, bottles, plastic cups, forgotten clothes and abandoned furniture are some of the objects that we will find much more frequently than expected .
Currently, by partially cutting off the entrances, the place is cleaner, although it is not as clean as we would like. From here we would like to appeal to all the people who visit this place, to conserve the environment and take the garbage, because it is a shame to find such a beautiful and magical place, so dirty'.
Antonio reacts to this (Sep. 1, 2021):
'It is a real shame as among all the pigs that went there and left all the garbage, and the hippies with their settlements, they have loaded the environment. In the end we pay righteous for sinners.
They say it is because they are private .. Yes, they have always been private, but they let bathers go, the problem is that it was already a dunghill and a point of sale for drugs, robberies and mobsters.
Hopefully they will remove the fences from there and allow the bathrooms to all the public, but controlling a little who enters and leaves, that it does not spoil everything again'.
Rust In Pieces 💀
Sense
Remember that if we want to continue enjoying these spaces, conserving it is everyone's mission.

And yes, note how I don't name the specific springs involved.
Followers of this blog will have seen that the references to each recently posted photo of hot spring fun have now become shushed.
We here believe much more in being a part of the solution, rather than part of the problem.

But even so, soaking in Europe is not the only nature based activity which seeks to limit nature being trampled on and destroyed. Wild Swimming (UK) for instance shut down it's map references. Guardian (Jun. 2, 2020):
'Overcrowding at swimming spots around the country has prompted the Outdoor Swimming Society (OSS) to take down its online crowd-sourced map – at wildswim.com – for the first time since its launch in 2006.
...
Rew (Founder OSS Kate Rew) has even suggested the site may not be reinstated: “Armed as many of us are now with better common sense and better abilities around open water, we may need to go back to bush telegraphs and maps – there is a joy in finding your own swim spot, too.”
Current OSS advice includes swimming local, avoiding popular areas, swimming early or late in the day, and – contrary to its usual promotion of #sharetheswimlove – thinking twice before sharing on social media, to discourage other visitors'.
Should we do the same?
Well for one, we don't have exactly the same, I doubt whether the map supplied will serve as a guide to more soaking adventures?
Cut the (quite popular) list? Again there's insufficient info there for potential soakers to access directly the hot spring. It's just a tool to assist potential soaking seekers. And an encouragement to look further.

So where does info sharing assist in conservation?
That's difficult to answer, people seem to derive their info online mostly by ignorantly asking the question: I live in x, where's the closest soak to me?
However on this blog (other than the reports), you'll possibly see the name of the hot spring and possibly a hint of the direction. So you'll need to do the research yourself.
So should I not publish reports anymore? Hmm, I might have to think more about this.

Is there more than can be done?
* I personally prefer to foster purity.
Concerning soaking culture, Japan sets the global example but there's no reason why we can't try to imitate. Dogs, shampoo, shoes, swimwear, etc.; all need to go. Thus creating an atmosphere of respect. And cleanliness.
In Europe we have an extensive sauna culture which seems similar to Japanese onsen culture, so why can't this be replicated at our soaking sites?

* Make vehicle access less obvious.
Drive-in hot springs should be a no-no. With ease of access for motor vehicles, come all kinds of camper vans, whose occupants often stay (too) long and end up littering the surroundings. Do we know that in NZ a campervan should legally be able to have water for 48 hours and have sufficient capacity to store refuse (water) for the same period. This to protect the direct environment.

* Getting local users managing the locations.
They have all to win, nothing to lose. They know their way and they will create win-win situations for local communities and their natural surroundings.

* Crashing the European soaking culture.
Soaking is for all ages, the infirm, but surely the healthy as well.
Often the European soaking culture is dictated by the ability to hand in a bill of treatment to the health insurer; thus this dictates the soaking industry.
Where soaking is freely accessible the clientele is much more diverse and especially younger.
Quite a few older establishments (esp. in southern Europe) are also out of business, but in closing down so to has the access to the original sources disappeared. Investors are possibly waiting in the wings.
Open these closed locations and link these up with a new (counter) soaking culture.

Any other suggestions?

The future may be bright, but it seems that the future need not all be positive.

Terme di Bullicame, a free soaking spot which only could be resurrected thanks to a protracted local fight.

Church

- Blavatsky -
The Guardian reports (Dec. 18) on what seems the most relevant news item I could delve up concerning the past three months or so. Notably not on soaking, but in line with soaking & sweating.
Anyway, it concerns the induction of sauna (culture) in Unesco's intangible cultural heritage list:
'The entries were among the 35 from around the world added to the list for 2020, and also included the tradition of playing the hunting horn, a status awarded jointly to Italy, France, Belgium and Luxembourg, as well as the art of glass bead making.
Traditional saunas have been a mainstay of Finnish culture for thousands of years, with an estimated 3 million saunas in a country of 5.5 million people. A Finnish person, on average, takes at least one sauna a week.
“Sauna culture in Finland is an integral part of the lives of the majority of the Finnish population,” Unesco said. “Sauna culture, which can take place in homes or public places, involves much more than simply washing oneself. In a sauna, people cleanse their bodies and minds and embrace a sense of inner peace.”
It does seem that only the sauna culture of 'Finland' has been added. Unesco:
'Sauna culture, which can take place in homes or public places, involves much more than simply washing oneself. In a sauna, people cleanse their bodies and minds and embrace a sense of inner peace. Traditionally, the sauna has been considered as a sacred space – a ‘church of nature’. At the heart of the experience lies löyly, the spirit or steam released by casting water onto a stack of heated stones. Saunas come in many forms – electric, wood-heated, smoke and infra-red. Approaches vary too, with no hierarchy among them. Sauna traditions are commonly passed down in families and though universities and sauna clubs also help share knowledge.
In practice, according to Euronews (Dec. 23), Finnish government will report on a 6 yearly basis what it is doing to protect the national sauna tradition. Research will be undertaken on health benefits while the age old habit of wood burning sauna's might well need a more environmental friendlier update. Some architectural protection of old public sauna's. Another distinct cultural aspect from this article:
'How does Finland's sauna culture compare?
When Claudia Rehwagen first arrived in Finland as an exchange student 17 years ago, the concept of the sauna was familiar to her from her childhood in East Germany. The culture around the sauna, however, is different in Finland, she explained.
“In Germany, we weren’t allowed to throw water on the stones ourselves. In Finland, the sauna is for everybody, and it’s a relaxed event. It’s all about listening to your own body and doing what feels good on the day,” she said. “Finnish saunas have fewer rules.”
Isolated islands in front of Helsinki are perfect for adventures. We found this sauna while cruising in the evening.
Looking for more info on European sauna culture?
Denmark's Trends and Travels (Feb. 7, 2018) has an article on Europe's (naked) sauna's, albeit in their local tongue. Translated snatches:

'Finland loves e.g. the naked truth. Unlike most other countries, Finns do not even require a towel to sit on in the sauna. For the same reason, women and men are usually separated in separate rooms.
In return, both sexes are very welcome to drink and eat in the sauna. Beer, cider or vodka is popular as a drink in Finnish saunas. Some even fry sausages over an open fire in the sauna.
...
The Germans actually have a reputation for being a bit formal and buttoned up, but when it comes to saunas, they like to throw away all their clothes. However, they always have a towel with them.
....
In fact, the French have a problem with nudity in public space. Being without clothes is a very private thing and the galls are much more embarrassing than most people think. In other words, you have to wear swimwear if you want to go to the sauna in France.
Italians cultivate their reputation for being passionate, but forget about it in a sauna. Women and men are welcome to sit in the same room, but they are wearing clothes'.

Elsewhere I saw a suggestion that if Finnish sauna culture can receive official Unesco status, shouldn't German FKK follow suit? Source.

Vapor
A recent find: A World of Spa. In one of their latest postings they nominate their Top 10 of Budapest's best spa's and hot springs:

'Budapest is famous throughout Europe for its Spas, frequented not only by Hungarians but also by the many tourists who go there attracted by the idea of being able to relax, enjoying the benefits of the waters as well as massages and additional services offered at very convenient prices. There are more than a hundred underground thermal springs in Budapest, around which many Spas have been built, the city is known as the Queen of Waters.

The Hungarian capital is therefore the capital of fumes, vapors, and mineral waters. Some say that thanks to the spas in Budapest you can even rejuvenate!

OffbeatBudapest also haves a list (Nov. 29) with 7 of the best soaking places in the city.
'But despite what you might think, the vast majority of Hungarians don’t regularly go to thermal baths. At the seven main baths featured below, about 75 percent of guests are tourists on average. Locals who do go to baths mainly consist of diehard regulars, and patients looking to treat ailments like rheumatoid arthritis, muscle pain, or skin diseases. As an added incentive, the Hungarian national health insurance plan subsidizes these prescribed visits.
Budapest has a total of nine medicinal baths today (and 123 hot springs). While the water’s mineral content is comparable, each bath is unique in terms of its size, architecture, amenities, and the type of visitors it draws. Most popular and the biggest of all is Széchenyi, located inside Budapest's City Park. Apart from Széchenyi, tourists mainly flock to Gellért and Rudas, the visually most striking venues. In turn, many locals seek out quieter locations with lower admission fees'.
...
Like it or not, nudity is no longer accepted. Except for Rudas, all Budapest baths are coed and require a bathing suit.
Hmmm.

More recent bytes from around the continent.
Thermalsprings.ru has put together a list (Dec. 12) of Turkey's hot springs. Impressive. Most examples though developed.

The entry on this blog concerning Thermae 2000 (Netherlands) was updated.

Older news, from Corsica.
In the Professionbienetre (13 Mar. 2019) mention is made of upgrading the baths of Pietrapola, where there's also a rough outside and gratuite tub. I suspect they mean the nearby thermal facilities which sees little visits.
Corse Martin (Jul. 23) notes that the thermal establishment is closed and will not open even if the Covid-19 lockdown passes.

Thinkgeoenergy (Oct. 11) brings up Italy, notably Tuscany:
'Work continues on the construction of a swimming pool at Santa Fiora in Italy. The bath will be utilising geothermal energy. Nearby is the Bagnore 4 geothermal power plant by Enel. (location)
So not thermal water?
The article also refers to some local opposition, though I believe it is oppostion against the geothermal powerplant, not the public investment. See for instance Internatzionale.it (Jul. 20):
'The valleys on the sides of Mount Amiata are full of power plants: in addition to Bagnore 3 and 4, the three plants of Piancastagnaio 3, 4 and 5 surround the slopes of this volcanic massif. "They have ruined a territory and sold out our lives," says Velio Arezzini, spokesman for the national network No to speculative and polluting geothermal energy (Nogesi), which has been fighting against this type of plant for decades. “We could focus on tourism, on the beauty of the area, on quality agriculture. Instead, industrial geothermal energy was chosen, which ruins the landscape and creates enormous problems ”.
It's a very interesting article giving a good intro into the pro's and cons of the chosen path for geothermal energy production in Italy's northern Tuscany. Ample scope for improvement it seems. Pity though that spite comes after destruction.

Tuscia Times reports (Nov. 25) yet again on action by G. Faperdue who in his quest for a public hot spring chained himself yet again to the gate of Bullicame hot spring (Viterbo, Lazio):
'Il pozzo non è stato chiuso e non sono neanche iniziati i lavori. Con molta probabilità la vicenda proseguirà con esiti incerti nel 2021, entrando così nel settimo anno (numero biblico) di sofferenza del Bullicame”.
Despite there being court orders and government affirmation (from 2014), redeploying the sources waters from private back to public is yet to take place. A hot item for 2021.

For me that's one of the most impressive places on earth.🌎

Wauiiii!
Hassliebe hin oder her.

Andalucia then.
Tierrassinfronteras (Oct. 29) heads to Hedionda roman baths (Malaga).
Not hot, but a constant 21ºC during the year and sulfurous in origin. Mud bathing is also in fashion. As always a good and complete description, even instructing bathers to not muddy around. Confusing.

From Ideal.es (Aug. 8), an article on Los Baños de Urquízar de Dúrcal (see also photo following) in the Andalusian province of Granada. Translated:
'A study shows that the water that originates the springs of the Baños de Urquízar comes from the thawing of part of the Sierra Nevada snow. It is known that there is a great fault from the Triassic era (200,000,000 years ago) through which it penetrates and filters to a depth between 2 and 3 kilometers below the level of the municipality of Dúrcal, located in the Granada region of Valle de Lecrín, where it forms an inland sea.
There, in the depths, the water takes temperature and rises through the cracks in the subsoil until it appears on the surface, constituting the different springs with a temperature between 26 and 27 degrees. Due to their origin, these springs are uncontaminated and inexhaustible because they do not come into contact with surface waters either'.

It's rumored to have been sought after for its medical properties since the Roman times. This site will help you get here.

Restraint
A new find, Nudeblog.ru, has been around for a while but dipped below the radar. Because they are mostly posts in Russian.  Question mark.
It has a recent (Jul. 9) posting on the Armenian hot spring of Hankavan. Other postings are of a hot spring near Kolka glacier (North Ossetia; looks great see photo following).

And of Biragzang (Nov. 13), likewise also North Ossetia. Translated:
'The depth of the well from which the water rises is 2,300 meters. And the water temperature is over 40 degrees. Upon entering, the skin is covered with a very pleasant film and is saturated with oxygen. And it keeps smooth and very delicate for a very long time.Stay in the pool for no more than 40 minutes. The procedure puts a lot of stress on the heart.
...
Women should be restrained in clothes and not squeal, wrap themselves in a towel'.

Cleansing

The Jews of Rome
The town of Pitigliano (situated in the very south of Italy's Tuscany) is a bit of an anomaly for Italians town. Important during medieval times, well preserved and perched over and above a narrow gorge (see photo below), the town has for an oddity: a rich Jewish heritage.
Many Jewish people left Rome during the Counter-Reformation and somehow it was Pitigliano that provided a safe haven, being just beyond the grasps of papal Rome.
For many centuries thereafter the Jewish community had a large influence on the towns traditions and development.
And why is this relevant?

Near Pitigliano (about 4 kms out of town) is a hot spring which saw a building established on top and is better known as the Jewish bath of Pitigliano.
However, better times (especially after the second World War) saw many of Pitigliano's Jewish community assimilate and/or leave altogether.
Meaning the bath building came into disrepair.
Now the building is part of a hotel / BnB (named Valle Orientina [Oriental valley]) which uses the renovated bath to promote a wellness stay.

Experience
We arrive late in the afternoon, having been discovering the surrounding countryside first.
Valle Orientina is located in a nice green place, especially this time of year and it's not so difficult to find either. The junction for heading towards the baths is a couple of kms north of town. The road drops into a shady green valley towards a parking area with the bath house behind.

The interior of the bath house is easy to view: there's a glass door to look through. Beyond the door there is a stair which leads to the bath waters themselves. Not much steam inside and not very busy, actually it's deserted.

We wander onward towards what appears the main building. Inside we ask the reception for the opportunity to bathe. It's a hefty 10€ per head, seems a bit steep for a lesser maintained walled in bath.
In the main building we have to descend the stairs to the main wellness area located in the basement, again deserted. Apparently we have to change here in the changing room, despite the Jewish baths having their equally small changing room.
As we need to retrace our steps through the hotel building itself and having to need some state of decorum, it means that we have changed virtually nothing.

So back at the baths we remove further clothing (exclusing swim costume) and step into the baths.
The building itself has a vaulted ceiling and a few minuscule windows to let in just a bit of daylight, which otherwise streams in through the glass door.

The building (and thus bath) itself houses 5 subsections: that in line with the entrance, and on either side 2 subsections. The back sections contain water spouts with some massaging qualities. Furthermore it doesn't seem so but it's a little chillier than the quoted 37°C.
After a half hour of splashing we leave the building, partially relieved.

Nice plus
Strangely the English version of the website of Valle Orientina has no further information on the baths. It contrasts greatly with visitor experience.
Take for instance booking.com users giving a 8.4 (30 reviews) to the accommodation here with most naming the terme as it's sole positive aspect.
Tripadvisor visitors rate this place a 4.5 star (221 reviewers) stay over. Some reviews:
'The SwimmingPool with Thermal water is Amazing'.
'The Hot Springs pool is pretty nice'.
'The spa is incredible!!!
'The spa is a little gem and unique in itself''.
'The spa is wonderful'.
'The thermal baths are a nice plus'.
The Italian version of the website though has much more information on the hotel, the baths and bathing. It also has an overview with  the usual loads of rules; the most important one I could find: for purposes of hygiene swim wear is required. That seems a bit of a contradiction unless they frown on modern day swim wear which seems to be shorts and t-shirts.

This picture from Valle Orientina website suggests that the former rule may well be open to interpretation.
In Italian we also learn that it was in use with the Jewish community for their ritual purification bath (Mickvèh) until the 1950's.
The tradition of Mikvèh is a cleansing ritual which seems solely obliged to women, men tend to need a lot less purifying it seems (note to readers: I actually believe the opposite to be true).
The waters are 37°C, natural rich in calcium, magnesium, iron - the absence of sulfur.

Elsewhere in the main building the Valle Orientina's wellness programme includes a sauna, a salt cave and a jacuzzi.

Spicing up

Besides a visit to Pitigliano itself, there's some delightful waterfalls more southerly in Lazio near the town of Farnese. West of this village, once the road crosses a big stream, there's a waterfall directly north of the road. But this is not where we are heading.
A few hundred meters later there's a sign board on the south near a track indicating a track to Cascata del (di?) Salabrone (tripadvisor). This Cascata is part of the Selve del Lamone natural reserve, where there's been quite some effort to get visitors actively seeking it's secrets.

Park along the SR47 roadside and walk another 500m or so to a clearing. Directly in front is a small unused hydro power station. Behind this is a small waterfall, while a 100m upstream is a larger waterfall with a 5m drop.
Both waterfalls (should!) invite a bit of skinny dipping ....

Purifying my own body and spirit!
