Aguas termales -

Starting off this update of sources topical on the Iberian peninsula.
Galicia en Ruta has a recent (Mar. 29) short reference on Facebook to Termas de Prexigueiro, an outstanding still free hot spring. Including atmospherical imagery.

Lucy and Ben of Rusttoroadtrip have been checking out (Jun. 26) some of Portugal's natural hot springs, most to be found on the Azores. From their insta account, an exception:
'Caldas de Rainha, an hour’s drive from Lisbon, is a city home to the world’s oldest thermal hospital. To us the idea of a thermal hospital was entirely alien, coming from a country where the NHS is our proudest national achievement (that and David Attenborough), yet the therapeutic effects of thermal water are woefully understudied.
As we were shown around the grand hospital building, we were fascinated to discover that students came here from all over Portugal to study the use of thermal water as a healing tool. We were shown around the rooms of baths and ceramic inhalators, some cracked with age'.
Elsewhere on their Iberian (and Azores) tour they have been to locations in the south of Spain (link, Jun. 10).
On their own website they have posted (Jun. 18) an intriguing stay in Portugal:
'Carved into the steep-sided banks of the river Tua in the north of Portugal, almost invisible from the cobbled road, lies the ghost village of S.L. Hollow-eyed houses with empty window frames and broken shutters peer unseeingly at the impressive view, garden terraces long since overgrown. Only two buildings have roofs and windows in tact, a small guesthouse, little used, and a brand new spa building that was built and decommissioned within 2 years of opening.
...
We can’t resist a bathe, even though the water is only 32ºC it’s rich in minerals, and soaking beneath the stone ceiling, blackened with age, and the ancient stone walls flickering with red candlelight feels rather like sitting at a sacrificial altar'.

Over to Italy.
Worldthermalsprings has been hot on tour (Jun. 12 - Jul. 3) of Italy (see above), Rome and the north, a seemingly never ending visit to all commercial and / or public springs available, see their map. Probably best to check their insta account as the website itself has yet to be updated with these finds.

The Facebook page of Sicilia Segreta highlights (Jul. 13) the Bagni di Cefalà Diana which is significant due to being the only Islamic thermal complex on the island.

A find, the excellent Nature & Source Chaude. A French language blog with hot springs in the lead. Mostly from france of course, though there are also entries on Italy. Good info, good research as well as the add-on of drone coverage. A recent (Jun. 18) entry is on central Framce's Source Croizat. Translated:
'When these waters are not agitated (no bathers), natural light helps to bring out their perfect clarity. This light is also a source of energy for the photosynthetic micro-organisms that flourish freely in the water (several billion per litre) and those that cover its perimeter. This thermal plankton (cyanobacteria, protists, etc.), visible on the edges, produces enormous quantities of active molecules in the water'.

Marketing
Over to the sauna world.

Starting off with a snippet which falls right on the fence itself. ThinkGeoenergy (Jul. 19) report on how the town of Oldenburg will use geothermal heat to rebuild public facilities which include a saltwater bath and sauna's.

BBC look into beer spa's (Jun. 10):
'Beer spas have recently opened in Iceland, Spain and the US – but they take their cue from an older tradition in a country with a long history as a beer bastion: the Czech Republic.
The stained-glass image of one of greatest scientists in history – 16th-Century Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe – looked down on me as I prepared jump into a giant 1,000-litre water-filled oak tub. Assisting me was Nikola Skypalova, who was holding big wooden ladles brimming with key elements to add into the water.
"This is hops – it relieves stress from your body and also opens up your pores," she said, pouring it into the tub. "And this is brewer's yeast, which has a lot of vitamin B, and makes you look younger."
In it went, along with malt – another well-being booster.
...
Almost every beer spa talks of beer bathing dating back millennia – though this seems to involve conflating the historical existence of spas with the co-existence of beer, with no evidence the two came together at ancient kick-back time.
...
Czech beer spas, meanwhile, regularly cite one of the multiple former kings called Wenceslas as a regular beer bather. Sadly, this also stands up about as strongly as someone who's drunk too many pints from the beer spa tub-side taps.
"This is certainly not true," says Libor Zajic, a European brewing history expert at Masaryk University in Brno – though he adds that one of the royal Wenceslases did become the patron saint of Czech brewers in the 14th Century. "It's a marketing trick of companies that operate beer spas – businesses that are a modern invention.
..
Beer may have been added to baths in the Middle Ages, as many other substances were, but certainly not with any deeper intention."There may, however, be a stronger case on the wellbeing side. "Beer consists of three components that are beneficial to skin: malted cereal grains, yeast and hops," says Dr Cindy Jones, a biochemist at Colorado Aromatics. "Both malted grains and yeast contain B vitamins, which increase skin hydration and elasticity, and decrease hyperpigmentation'.
An Australian look at Austrian spa etiquette. Sydney Morning Herald (Jul. 11):
'Forget all that nonsense about the Scandinavians and the Germans and their propensity for getting their kit off in public; it’s the Austrians who have taken the art of nudity to a whole new level.
I became convinced of this when two members of our travel group were turfed out of a five-star Austrian hotel spa for the sin of … wearing clothing. And we’re talking swimsuits here, not a three-piece suit and a trilby. The women were agog, and not a little indignant, at being told to get undressed or get out.
...
That night at dinner in a traditional Hutessen restaurant (where you DIY-cook strips of meat by throwing them against what is essentially an upright brazier) a young Austrian public relations woman explained that she happily went to spas/saunas with colleagues (male and female) after a day at the office or at a conference.
It was just a way of life, a social ritual about as controversial as going for a cheeky beer after work. Which is when it hit me; I have nothing against getting my clothes off with a bunch of strangers – after all, I’m never going to see them again – but I wondered if, when it came to friends and colleagues, would I feel different? Not so this young Austrian woman, who looked at me like I was a crazy old stick-in-the-mud. What, your work colleagues haven’t seen you naked?
Badische Neuste Nachrichten however explains (Jun. 28) how catering to tourists means local etiquette can be ignored in the search for more money.
In the past a visit to Baden-Badens' Friedrichsbad has often resulted in many comments about how un-accustomed one is to the German nacktpflicht. However the operators of the Friedrichbad have decided to allow clothing bathing which will be allowed twice a week (Wednesdays and Saturdays), as of the beginning of July:
Good to see that management are more concerned about their bottomline. Pity though that this rite of passage for international tourists will disappear, just for the sake of some coins. In the past tourists were alerted by management that naked bathing and saunaing was more hygienicinic (example). Not so now?
The article reference on instagram garners quite a few replies. Some examples:
Though many defend the decision.
And then there's organised resistance to the view that the town's cultural heritage should be determined by private companies (Badische Neuste Nachrichten, Jun. 24) seeking profits, above culture / history:
'Das Friedrichsbad habe aber große Bedeutung für das Welterbe und beherberge einige bedeutende Kostbarkeiten, die der Öffentlichkeit kaum bekannt seien. Für die Pflege des historischen Bades und ein „erlebbar machen“ seien geschichtliche, balneologische und physiotherapeutische Kompetenzen notwendig'.
Självklart!! Det är väl bara sinnessvaga som badar med kläderna på..........
#saltholmen #saltholmensnakenbad #blackandwhitephotography #blackandwhite #svartvittfoto #svartvitt #nudebathing #göteborg #gothenburg #sweden #sverige
Swedish bathing culture. A few bath houses (Kallbadhus) in west Sweden allow naked bathing, but only Göteborgs' Salthomen enforces nudity. With a recent example of enforcement reported by Göteborgs Posten (Jun. 29):
'A day in the high summer heat at the cold bathhouse took an unexpected turn for Louise - when her 16-year-old daughter was scolded for wearing clothes.- You have to respect that they are teenagers and that sometimes it can take time, says Louise.
- I protect the nude bath we have, counters the association's chairman.
...
On the cold bath house's website it says " According to the association's bylaws, we all sunbathe and bathe naked. This applies to both members and day visitors.” But in the statutes, the wording is that the association's goal is to " contribute to and
nurture a healthy and inclusive nudist culture".
It is thus open to interpretation'.
This example of exclusion has been made public, so as to force the hand of management? Opinion differs apparently (see flashback, just 50+ pages (600+ comments) of comments to wade through!), a further news report (Jul. 3) notes from the same source what other bathhouses have as rules. Translated:
'At Ulricehamn's cold bath house, there are also no explicit rules about what you should or should not wear on your body when sunbathing and swimming, according to chairman Jan Fritzson.
- The only thing is that you shouldn't sit with bare bottoms on the lichen in the sauna, but then you have to sit on a seat pad.
The rule that visitors must be naked in the sauna also exists in Varberg and Lysekil due to hygiene reasons.
- But you can cover yourself with a towel, says Eva-Lott Swahnberg'.
For something different. Saunatimes look (Jun. 27) at the Oslo floating sauna scene:
'No Oslo floating sauna trip is complete without experiencing any one of the 15 floatings saunas (and counting) as part of Oslo Badstuforening (Oslo Sauna Association). The saunas are set up in a couple different clusters. I was able to enjoy multiple saunas. Each sauna is special in its own way. Artistic, floating, and awaiting your presence'.
The author also writes up his sauna studded stay while on a sojourn from the US in the same Saunatimes (Jun. 2):
'As an inspiration for your own sauna travels, here is a travelogue of my recent trip to UK and Norway, where I enjoyed these 25 saunas in 9 days'.
3wCheck out the new flagship of the Oslo Sauna Association - @estudioherreros ‘s beauty, TROSTEN. With its playful and colorful expression, the outer facade is made from recycled aluminium, containing more than 75% of reused post-consumer aluminium scrap.

Finally, American Banyasf are on their Central European tour where they were at Therme Wien (Jun. 29):
'Therme Wien was the biggest therme so far and hosted multiple saunas with regular aromatherapy sessions, a cold plunge, 2 steam rooms, a gender-separated area for those so inclined, and beautiful outdoor relaxation areas. 🌿🧖‍♂️ In Budapest all of the thermes were clothing required. In Vienna and for the rest of the trip, all of the thermes would be textile-free, no clothing allowed in the sauna areas. As such, you can't take pictures inside. Just like at Archimedes Banya'.
From Jul. 6
'Day 8 The main event: Therme Erding, the world's largest spa! We indulged in aromatherapy sessions and the Champagne Pool in the textile-free section. There are 24 saunas and, as described on the website, “around 150 feel-good activities … waiting to be discovered by you every day.” It was so much fun that our group closed the place down at midnight. An unforgettable experience!
Day 1 - Budapest
The Sparty Bath Party at Széchenyi Bath was an unforgettable experience! From DJs to aerialist it was an experience - we missed the sauna's of the Széchenyi Bath which were closed for the party but the laser lights, electronic music, and warm thermal waters made for a night to remember.
Have you ever been to a bath party?

Another packed-to-the-rim post on Europe's soaking and bathing culture.

Let's start with the latter, afterall it's the main purpose of this blog.

Joyce Mol shares (Jan. 13) her best soaking finds of Europe no less and her personal experiences. Iceland to Turkey.

A French post (Nov. 5, 2023) concerning the wild hot springs of the Têt and Tuch valleys.

Saunachannel has asked Nudeblog to produce a film on Georgian hot and mud springs (Dec. 14). It results in a good overview of what's on offer in Georgia.

Over to Italy where most of this posts soaking info is referred from.

Rometravelouges (Jan. 23) has a good post on the hot springs (commercial or free) reachable from Rome, mostly to the north.
San Filippo is the northern most.
Here's a recent post (Jan. 9) solely on this terme libere by Juma.

LOVE IS MY MANTRA
Everything in your life is a reflection of a choice you have made.
If you want a different result, make a different choice.
An article (Dec. 23) from Vogue magazine on Saturnia hot springs (Tuscany):
'It’s just before sunrise, and the lights of Terme di Saturnia resort are already out of sight. I’ve been walking in the dark for less than a mile, through the rolling hills of the Tuscan countryside, in pursuit of one of the region’s wonders: Cascate del Mulino, a 3,000-year-old travertine hot spring believed to have sprouted in the Etruscan era. Save for a few other intrepid souls who are also braving the crisp morning air, I’m alone.
Arriving at the waterfalls, set just below an old stone mill, I drop my robe and rest it on the white pebbles surrounding the springs before tiptoeing into the first of the steamy pools. The chill of dawn on my skin ceases as I float in the sulfuric waters, resting at a temperature of around 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Soon, the crowds will arrive, but for now, I enjoy the oasis to myself, allowing it to both soothe and transport me. I wonder what it was once like to arrive here when the area had no resort or hotel nearby, when the Etruscans, and later the Romans, first began looking to the springs as a sanctuary for healing'.
For the rest it's a write up on the adjacent resort.
Also note that once the sun has risen, these soaks tend to be packed beyond limits.

A recent posting (Jan. 28) from Termalismo medievale in Toscana.

At the ancient Etruscan-Roman thermal complex of Sasso Pisano, hidden in a bush, a small source of very hot water (65 degrees ).
Shifting to the intermedium, mineral springs. Not hot, but naturally sourced.

The blog Wandering Carol has quite a spate of entries posted concerning bathing / soaking.
There's this post (Jan. 10) on UNESCO recognized great spa's of Europe:
'With my recent trip to the German spa towns of Bad Ems and Bad Kissingen (I also went to Karlovy Vary in Czechia, but I’ve visited there a million times so it didn’t add to my total), I’ve nearly reached my goal.
I’m determined to visit the 11 UNESCO World Heritage Great Spas of Europe. My count now stands at nine'.
Later that month she reports (Jan. 25) on Bad Ems:
'From the picture it looked like Bad Ems would have everything I want in a spa town: Belle Epoque architecture, a scenic setting, fresh air and plenty of nature to get out in.
Best of all I learned Bad Ems has 15 mineral springs that are still used in spa treatments and healing therapies today'.
The article looks extensively at everything one would want to do as well as a review of Bad Ems therme and (not hot) springs.

Earlier (Dec. 9), she had an extensive post on Karlovy Vary as well one (Dec. 21) on Bad Kissingen.

Focus.de notes (Jan. 5) the newest wellness trend: Bio-hacking. Basically incorporating all available techniques to ensure a healthy stay:
'With the help of modern technologies, a special diet, exercise and other methods, sleep should be improved, stress reduced and one's own energy reserves mobilized. Biohacking also includes tracking your own health values. For biohackers, measuring pulse, blood pressure and weight is just as much a part of their routine as regularly monitoring their own blood values. Fitness trackers, smartwatches, smart scales, home blood tests, sleep monitoring apps and food diaries are essential tools for biohackers. Wellness hotels are increasingly offering health checks or basic sports medical examinations before a biohacking retreat. Here, certain weak points and risk factors can be uncovered and a tailor-made nutrition and fitness plan can then be created'.

Over to the sauna news.
From Reddit, an overview (Dec. 2023) of European sauna etiquette.
And nearly 100 comments on how this overview is missing all kinds of nuances.
Clearly European sauna culture is more diverse than the map below suggests, with lots of niches. So complex.

Inews (Feb. 5) columnist Sarah Magill comments on German sauna culture:
'Entering a sweaty wooden cabin full of happily naked people for the first time in Berlin was uncomfortable, of course.  I found myself grappling with self-consciousness on two fronts – over my own body and in an attempt to conceal my intrigue at the variety of appendages on display. But I enjoyed the ritual of the sauna, especially the Aufguss (meaning “infusion”) procedure, during which a member of staff pours scented water on hot coals and skillfully disperses the resulting heat around with fans, for an even, more intense, sensation.
...
But in Germany, saunas are a common feature of most sports facilities and there are at least 20 public saunas in Berlin alone. Sauna culture is a big deal here. Last year, well over a quarter of the German population frequently went to the sauna or steam bath in their free time.
...
Having become accustomed to the German sauna etiquette, I was struck by the complete absence of it during a visit to a local health centre in southeast London last year. Everyone was sitting directly on the wood in soaking wet bathing suits, creating an overpowering smell of chlorine, until one elderly gentleman doused the coals in far too much oil he’d brought in a bottle from home. People were also coming and going after only a few minutes – seemingly not knowing what they were supposed to do in there. A German would be bemused, I thought.
It made me realise that the UK would really benefit from adopting German sauna culture. By introducing more public saunas and promoting a nudity-friendly environment, Brits could gain access to the physical and mental benefits long cherished in Germany'.
Sustainablejourneys (Jan. 16) has a look at the sauna culture of Finland and notably that of the city of Tampere:
'There are a staggering 60-odd saunas scattered across the Tampere metropolitan area but most, like this one, Rajaportti – strangely perhaps to outsiders who generally associate saunas with the luxurious spa retreats where they are most commonly found in other parts of Europe and North America – are quite modest affairs. Here, in a squat, unadorned building where entrance fees are collected without ceremony at a hatch, the pomp and priciness of much Western wellness is refreshingly absent.
‘I think of myself as a sauna classicist,’ confides Lembke [Alexander Markus Lembke], who is also available for hire as a guide to novices unfamiliar with Finnish sauna etiquette. ‘A real sauna is very different to how the concept has been interpreted in other places, and I want to show people that. Rajaportti is in a working-class district, you could be anyone coming in here, rich or poor, and when you do you’re all equal. The most shocking aspect for those coming to a Finnish sauna from the UK, or the US, is that everyone is naked. No clothes. Remove clothes and you take away miscommunication. In saunas here you encounter all body shapes and sizes, fat, thin, the old, the young, little ones of just a few weeks old, all equal, all relaxing and sweating. It’s a healthy thing for society.’
...
Once disrobed and inside, it’s all about the steam. Lembke’s role at Rajaportti is as saunan lämmittäjä (sauna heater), an art that he assures me is so complicated to perfect that it is considered a highly regarded job'.
The Guardian also delves into Finnish sauna culture (Dec. 6). Surprisingly with reference to Tampere again!
'But in Finland not only are saunas plentiful – an estimated 3.3m for a population of 5.6 million – but the culture around them is unique. Having originated to fulfil a very practical need for heat and sanitation, the sauna’s significance in Finnish society now goes far deeper – perhaps even to the essence of what it is to be human.
....
Tampere’s public sauna legacy goes back to the early 19th century, when the city was an industrial centre, out of a need for a communal place for primarily working-class people to wash, says Tuomas Paloniemi, from the tourism bureau Visit Tampere. “They needed to bathe, and bathrooms or private saunas were not so common in those residences.” By about 1820, there were more than 100 public saunas in the city, he says.
...
Sauna definitely contributes to Finland’s happiness levels, Koskenniemi [Janne Koskenniemi, the executive director of the Finnish Sauna Society] says. He compares the impact of regular sauna-going to having therapy. “When you’re in the sauna you’re naked in the physical sense, and you’re naked with your thoughts and your standing in society. It’s just you.”
Now I'm slowly losing my bearings: where are we?
Let's continue with a sauna review then, from nearby Norway. Womanshealthmagazine accepts a paid sojourn (thus very positive) to the Wells spa in Oslo. The report (Jan. 17):
'Situated in the midst of the Norwegian wilderness, The Well is all about taking time out from your daily (stressful) routines and making time for slowing down, eating well, resting and de-stressing.
Since it’s surrounded by this frosty dreamscape, both the spa and hotel take inspiration from the Nordic woodlands. It’s the kind of place that might actually prompt you to feel a little less prudish (read: British), since all cares about nakedness are left firmly at the front door'.
ℛ𝑒𝓁𝒶𝓍 𝓉𝒾𝓂𝑒 ♡
Then to the Irish Times (Jan. 14), as it looks at the emerald isle's own soaking traditions:
'Beach saunas have been a phenomenon of the past 12 months, and yet getting sweaty has a heritage in Ireland dating back to ancient times.
...
A 2021 study by Katie Kearns and Timo Ylimaunu recorded the sites of 290 sweat houses in Ireland, with the majority being found in Leitrim and its neighbouring counties. This was followed by Leitrim County Council’s Leitrim Sweathouse Project, conducted in partnership with the Heritage Council, which trained volunteer archaeologists and researchers, and added 19 more to the tally. They are sure there are more'.
The article concludes with mentioning a couple of seaside sauna's from around Ireland.

This fits here. The Guardian (Jan. 7) looks at the burgeoning Scottish sauna scene:
'This is Scandinavian winter living par excellence: but it’s not a Norwegian fjord or Swedish forest – it’s the banks of Loch Fyne on the west coast of Scotland. This is one of a growing number of Scandi-style outdoor saunas across the coastline where locals and visitors gather through the long, dark northern winter days in search of company and warmth, and to boost their physical and mental health'.
Gift
Some real news items.
As reported late last year, the BBC (Jan. 19) now notes:
'A Finnish sauna that was gifted to the UK after the 1948 Olympic Games has been granted Grade II-listed status.
The Märkische Allgemeine reports (Jan. 24) on problems with the Kristalltherme Ludwigsfelde. Apparently complaints are of guests getting too excited.
A day later there's an interview with the company's CEO (Kristalltherme Ludwigsfelde is one of Kristall Bäder AG) whereby he explains that with nearly 500,000 annual visitors there's always going to be a very few who seem to go beyond the rules.
So much for society wanting to extend the nakedness = sex.

Finally sauna and culture.
From the Reykjavik Grapevine (Jan. 16), they look at how Iceland contributed to the success of Smoke Sauna Sisters:
'To learn more about Iceland’s creative input, I met the film’s co-producer, Hlín Johannesdottír, at Sundhöllin public swimming pool on a busy morning right before Christmas. With water steaming on the rocks, we sat for a chat in the warmth of the public sauna.
...
Could the Icelandic hot pool culture compare to the sauna rituals? Hlín isn’t positive. “The smoke sauna is like a whole different level. Nothing that is talked about in there goes out anywhere.”
Sauna Times lastly reports (Jan. 7) on building your own Finnish smoke sauna.

Come New Year everybody is looking forward / backward. Past highlights / coming intentions.
Me? I'm just glad that I can still hang on to this spinning planet ...
But anyway, nearly six months back (Jul. 28)Fromrusttoroadtrip had an overview  of their best hotsprings visited on the European landmass:
'In our two years of travelling the continent, we’ve been lucky enough to visit an extensive number of natural, wild and free hot springs across Europe, and we thought it was about time we shared our knowledge and experience with other travellers!
They made a list of 12 hotsprings visited, from 8 countries, based on such as  Appearance, Temperature, Location and Odourless.
The latter one I feel is a bit strange. Sulphur may by far from odorless but is a good grade of medicinal value of spring water; i.e. the less odor the less medical benefit?
Also tips on etiquette for soakers.

Finishing first in their listings, with perfect marks is Prats Balaguer (Pyrénées-Orientales, France), second is Santa Fé (Andalucía, Spain) and Rupite (Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria) third.

Fabiola Castro‏  at Prats Balaguer:
Escapadeta de cousins!! #termes #natura #fontpedrouse#menjantnoslamona #cousins
Hmmm, all three are certainly very, very good.
I always find it difficult to compare. No two visits to the same springs are the same; so you could visit one of the three above and have a poorer experience, with giving lower marks. I for instance would include Icelandic hotpots in the listings, however if you've not been there ...

Anyway, Fromrusttoroadtrip have some very important general concluding remarks to share:
'It's worth remembering that these sites are free to use, just as nature intended. As a result, there are often no facilities at these sites. Please ensure you respect the locations mentioned above.
  • Take rubbish home.
  • Respect the surrounding area.
  • Respect the locals and their customs.
Don’t use any products in the water that will cause damage to the delicate eco-systems in and around the water'.

Off the continent, Soakpodcast has an interesting special about Ireland's pursuit of seaweed soaking. In the podcast:
'... we explore seaweed bathing, Ireland’s only indigenous bathing tradition, and how this edible sea vegetable has played a role far beyond the bathtub. We trace seaweed’s slippery history from an essential crop on the emerald isle, to it falling out of favor with the arrival of the potato, to its vogue as a vitamin rich tonic in Edwardian seaweed baths'.
Over to England.
The trial to use geothermal water for a pool upgrade in Penzance (Cornwall, UK) has seen a drilling come up with hotter than expected water.
Cornwalllive (Nov. 15):
'The Jubilee Pool geothermal spa will be hotter than expected and that means the water will reach temperatures of up to 30C.Geothermal Engineering Ltd, the company which has been drilling holes into the earth below the famous Jubilee Pool to tap into the earth's natural heat, said it found a warm water 'geothermal vein' 410 metres deep into the rock below Penzance's iconic sea water open air Lido. The company, which is also involved in building the UK's first ever geothermal power plant at United Downs near Redruth, where it is drilling two 4,5km deep holes into the earth's crust as part of a £18m EU-funded project with the potential to power 3,000 homes, said the hot water will now be tapped up to heat a section Jubilee Pool all year round'.
Note that the geothermal involvement will result in higher pool temperatures,  the waters are not to be used as pool water itself.

A nice find.
Sheexploreslife (Oct 10) has a women's take on the baths of Bath and the city itself.
It takes on Jane Austen, Bath's role in the suffragate struggles, Mary Shelley, cocktails and for the morning after: the hot spring baths.

Self-love
Back to the continent.
While not really concerning hot springs, it does involve bathing etiquette. La sex en rose visits a spa in Köln (Apr. 18):
'Now I tell you what it feels like to relax naked in Neptunbad and Claudius Therme, the two Spa centres in Cologne with only one thing in common: the wristband.
...
Why naked?
Because there’s nothing more natural.
Because it’s a way to temporarily forget all the social and cultural constraints we’re used to, and embrace an ideal of freedom and naturalness.
Because showing ourselves to others with no veils means communicating with honesty and no shame.
Because your body absorbs the sauna heat evenly and releases toxins by sweating free of the swimsuit.
Because nudity is not about voyeurism and exhibitionism here, but rather self-love and body care. As well as it’s nothing to do with sexual arousal and the orgy as an inevitable outcome'.

From the informative tierrassinfronteras (Nov. 6): they head to the Alicun thermal bath surroundings. With 28ºC these are more warmer than hot. Lots of good info, would have come in handy when I was here a couple of years ago.Google translated:

'Is it worth going to this place? Well, for us, yes, it is always a pleasure to enjoy hot springs in the middle of nature. In addition, the Raja de Alicún has the charm of being in a small canyon surrounded by rivera vegetation, a small oasis in a semi-desert environment of spectacular beauty.
...
The temperature of the water resembles more the Balsa de Cela in Almería. What we mean by this, is that these natural thermal baths are ideal for sunny days in the fall and spring season. If we choose the winter season, it is better to decide on other hot springs with higher temperatures, such as those mentioned above'.

Tusciaweb reports (Oct. 14) on the procedures on Viterbo - Lazio (Italy) hot springs. Google translate:
'Summing up, the college rejects the complaints proposed by Antiche Terme and Le Masse, confirms the order of 26 January 2018 and condemns the complainants to reimburse the costs of the dispute at Free Time for 4 thousand euro, along with other lump sums. Another piece of an infinite story'.
Meanwhile ThinkGeoenergy reports (Oct. 15):
'Among the many examples offered during a recently held conference on Perspectives and impact of the green economy, organized in Pisa within the International Robotics Festival, is a project that cultivates geothermal energy and spirulina, having created around 100 jobs in Tuscany/ Italy'.

Iceland, Torfajökull Caldera, 2018
On our 9th day of hiking through stormy weather in the southern highlands of Iceland we turned eastwards. Refuges and busroutes were closed already after the summerseason and offpath we just felt like the last humans on earth. The temperatures dropped quickly, the wind and rain raised. What could be better than a lonesome hot spring to take a bath and warm up, before we @svetlanabierl continued our longest day-march of the tour? . ...........#iceland #hiking #trekking #lonesome #far#hotspring #hotpot #travel #highlands#valley #mountains #photography#landscape #landscapephotography #island#photographer #nature #naturephotography#nakedbath #naturebath #backpacking#nakedhiker #naked #icelandtravel#iceland.explore #vulcanic #exploreiceland#natgeo #natureart #nakedwoman #fujifilm
Likewise another personal experience.

Photographer Romydermout (Nov. 4) heads for a unique experience in the otherwise well-trampled Reykjadalur hot river, Iceland. Tip you might need google translate, but basically two friends head up in the dark and are the sole soakers early morn, so ...:
CupofTJ has a slightly older vlog:
'ICELAND TRAVEL VLOG DAY 5. Head into the North on the Ring Road around Iceland. Discovered the falls Gufufoss and geothermal cave Grjótagjá near Myvatn!'

Brisk
And now for the Icelandic topicals.
The Reykjavik Grapevine reports (Oct. 26) on some less exciting news:
'The Environment Agency of Iceland has announced that blood flukes, a type of parasitic flatworm, have been discovered in the geothermal springs of Landmannalaugar.
In this case, the parasites were likely borne to the waters by ducks, in particular mallards and greater scaups. Visitors to Landmannalaugar should be aware that they may contract this parasite by bathing in the geothermal pools, and therefore caution is strongly advised'.
ThinkGeoenergy (Oct. 25) reports on yet another new geothermal bath in Iceland:
'With several geothermal baths and spas all over the country, with the Blue Lagoon as the most known, there are now several other bathing facilities being built or planned in Iceland.
The newest, as reported by Icelandic national TV station RUV, is now being built at Lake Urridavatn near the town of Egilsstadir in the East of Iceland.
...
Around 1,000 guests per day will be able to bath in the running pool'.
Basalt Architects are in the design business, they also announced that they have added a hot spring pool at Akranes:

Today was the much anticipated inauguration of Guðlaug nature sea baths in Langisandur, Iceland. The sea swimming club were the first to give it a try after a brisk swim in the December sea. Guðlaug is now open to the public free of charge. Come to Akranes and enjoy bathing in warm geothermal water at the edge of the Atlantic ocean.#basaltarchitects #guðlaug #akranes#mannvit #liska
A Facebook post from 3 years ago reveals what the idea was:
'The beach is a popular common space for the people of Akranes who both simply pass by to enjoy the vista as well as using the beach for a variety of activities. The baths are open to the public and play a supporting role, for example as a gathering point for ocean swimmers in dire need of warming up. The formal expression of the baths is inspired by the naturally occurring pools of seawater that form around rocks sitting on the beach as the tide flows in and out. It is composed of three platforms, the top as a viewing deck/roof, the middle as the Guðlaug bath itself that flows into the bottom, a shallow pool at beach level'.

Getting naked in Iceland is a titillating title presenting an article by Guide to Iceland; seems pretty current.
'Attitudes towards nudity in Iceland are very relaxed.
...
It is, however, perfectly legal to be nude in public in Iceland, as long as you don't offend anyone.
...
Shy travellers face both a blessing and a curse when it comes to nudity and swimming pools in Iceland.
On the one hand, swimsuits are mandatory in all public pools (not including bikini tops), so you don’t need to worry about getting flashed while you’re trying to relax. On the other, you are obligated to shower and wash your naked body before you enter the pool.
...
Iceland is a geothermal wonderland, dotted with bursting geysers, churning mud pools, and steaming hot springs. Many of these have the perfect temperature for bathing, and some are so remote that you can jump in naked without worrying about other people seeing you.
Before indulging in the wonders of nude bathing in Iceland’s naturally heated waters, however, there are a few things to be aware of.
...
Many hot springs, however, are perfectly safe to enter in the nude and some can be found without anyone around. There is no judgement from Icelanders for this kind of skinny-dipping, even if you are caught. Not only is naked bathing seen as a wonderful way to connect with nature, it’s a smart way to keep your clothes dry and lighten your laundry load'.

Reykjavik Grapevine reports (Dec. 5) on (another?) geothermal beer:
'This is the story of Ölverk, a brew pub and pizzeria in Hveragerði, just a short drive from Reykjavík over the dramatic Hellisheiði mountain pass. The town is mostly known for the Reykjadalur “hot river” bathing spot, and the plentiful geothermal energy that helps run large greenhouses that glow brightly throughout the dark winter, but Ölverk is seeking to put itself on the map.
...

“We use geothermal energy in the process,” he says, venting one of the tanks dramatically. “The steam is piped in at 150 degrees, and it heats up the freshwater, barley, hops and yeast.”
Finally, just a no-nonsense picture: soaking in Georgia.
