Finding a hidden hot spring is the best kind of reward.This hot spring in Armenia lay hidden in the mountains at the end of one of the most challenging hikes we’ve ever done. It wasn’t long, nor steep, but it demanded that we cross seven icy rivers on foot, bare feet breaking through slabs of icy and the current threatening to topple us over. Throw the potential of some sleepy, grumpy bears into the mix, and it was anything but a leisurely stroll.Fortunately the rewards were great; we were the only people soaking in this vivid orange pool, enjoying a natural massage from the geyser that spurts out of the ground every few minutes. We were able to strip off and relax into the sights and sounds of the wilderness for a good couple of hours; pure tonic for the spirit.Ordinarily the greatest challenge of finding a hot spring presents is pinpointing it on a map, but this one was exceptional. But this very challenge is why we rarely share hot spring locations online; the process from knowing it exists, to finding it and finally soaking in it brings with it the joy of reward. Much like a treasure hunt makes finding the treasure all the more thrilling, knowing you’ve worked hard to find it.Apps and maps have taken the thrill out of adventure in recent years; all information is readily available online, ‘secret’ locations are shared freely without consideration of who may find them and what their intentions are.We’ve seen the most beautiful secret beaches and hidden hot springs destroyed from the footfall created by social media, which leads to overcrowding and privatisation. Hidden gems are disappearing at a faster rate than ever, which leaves us wondering what a world without adventure will one day look like.We believe that everyone should have access to the healing power of hot springs without paying a fee, but it’s up to those of us who decide to share them online to do so in a conscious and responsible way.The hot springs of Armenia were certainly unique, although not very hot and made difficult to access by the ongoing conflict between the country and neighbouring Azerbaijan, they certainly were beautiful.
