You would expect that in the summer with everybody out and about, that there would an enormous amount of soaking related news to share.
But not so the case, so it seems.

Most impressive newsbit, is this from viterbonews24.it which reports (Aug. 2) on the reopening of the Bagnaccio therme, after 3 years of the apparent (?) renovation. Translated:
'After more than three years of closure, the Terme del Bagnaccio , one of the iconic outdoor wellness destinations in Tuscia, is officially back open . This morning, Saturday, August 2nd, the renovated thermal park on the outskirts of Viterbo was inaugurated with the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony and the return of bathers to the four steaming natural pools, surrounded by lush greenery'.
Not much renovation it seems, more a time-out to get the legal side of the business accordingly.
Whatsupmedia also reported (Aug. 4):
'The spa closed its doors in May 2022 due to issues related to the revocation of the mining concession. The reopening was possible after a long and fraught process, after a new company, Rise Srl, was awarded the sub-concession and the necessary inspections were carried out by the Local Health Authority to verify the sanitary conditions and the functionality of the facilities'.
A week later (Aug. 9), the same source reflects on the commencement of operations:
'To assess the situation, Viterbonews24 visited the site. Since morning, the parking lot was full, and there were about ten people waiting in line at the ticket counter: clear signs of appreciation for the spa, which continues to offer a one-of-a-kind experience, combining the rustic charm of natural hot springs with a welcoming atmosphere'.

Pearl
Usually French website, Nature et sourcechaude, has compiled his soaking experiences on Pantelleria, in English (Aug. 21):
'In fact, the island of Pantelleria, which has no shortage of elegance, is a spa with a wide range of natural thermal treatments. During my stay of a few days, I invite you to discover the thermal wealth of this island of volcanic origin, nicknamed ‘the Black Pearl of the Mediterranean’.

The Guardian (Aug. 20) on some of the hot springs on Ikaria (Greece), simultaneously letting out the secret:

'There are no signs to the hot spring, but I locate it on the map and we drive to the end of the paved road. Overlooking the sea is a stone bench someone has dedicated to her parents, “with gratitude and love as deep as the Aegean”. My dad died recently and the words strike home. I’m glad my mum has joined me on this little adventure.
We walk down to the deserted cove at Agia Kyriaki thermal springs. There are old fishing shacks with stone-slab roofs, and shuttered cottages. Down an unmarked path, we find a rock pool where hot waters bubble gently from the sand, blending with the sea to a perfect temperature. Immersed in the healing mineral bath, I look up at juniper trees and blue sky, lulled by lapping waves and cicadas'.

In Hungary plans are underway to renovate Hèviz. Hungary Today (Jul. 10):
'Lake Hévíz and the high-quality health facility built on its shores welcome around one million guests from all over the world every year. This is an institution and piece of infrastructure that is extremely important not only for the region but also for the country as a whole, and one of its lake structures had to be closed in the spring for structural reasons'.

Think Geoenergy (Jul. 3) on new geothermal plans in Croatia, including enjoying a hot spring:
'With a geothermal resource in the city of Bjelovar, Croatia now confirmed, the city is investing on a thermal spa facility that is expected to boost spa and wellness tourism in the region. Through the use of geothermal water and heat, as well as a photovoltaic power plant, the future Terme Bjelovar facility will be the first energy-independent thermal facility in Croatia.
...
The thermal spa complex will have a gross area of 13,000 square meters. It will have seven pools, including an Olympic-sized pool. The spa will draw water from a shallow geothermal spring, and will use heating and cooling from the deeper geothermal source. Terme Bjelovar is expected to be completed by March 2026 and will open by June of the same year'.
World Thermal Springs (22 Aug.), translated:
Bosnia and Herzegovina and thermal baths. To the south of Banja Luka there is Banja Vručica or Srpski toplice, where warm waters flow out along the river's edge. You can swim in natural caves among the rocks or in small artificial pools on the shore. Free.
There is also a modern building with a thermal pool, but the photos are only from the outside.
Locals even arrange thermal pools in their homes. I photographed one such pool. Mineralization 550-580 mg/l, pH 6.4-7.2. Temperature about 30 degrees. #bosniaandherzegovina #thermalspringsoftheworld #wordthermalsprings
Sceptics
Once more, the Guardian (Jun. 19), this on urban swimming:
'When the sun is shining in Norway’s capital (and even when it’s not), swimmers plunge into the salty fjord from packed floating saunas and the city beaches are full of paddling toddlers. It is difficult to believe that the waters around Oslo were not always like this.
Until an enormous cleanup process that began in 2006, decades of industry mistreatment, runoff from the city and waste dumping had left the inner Oslofjord heavily polluted.
But after multiple remediations of the seabed, the removal of contaminated material from the harbour basin and the introduction of a huge water and wastewater project, completed in 2015, today it is an urban swimming paradise.
...
The radical turnaround is perhaps best exemplified by Oslo Sauna Association’s 26 floating saunas across seven sites in the city.
Formed in 2016 by diplomats from the ministry of foreign affairs’ ice swimming club, it now has a membership of 18,000 and is pretty much fully booked from 7am until 11pm from October to April. Last year 260,000 people visited their saunas, which are accessible for both locals and tourists who swim-sauna-swim-sauna on repeat for as long as they can.
The turnaround has transformed the city, said Ragna Marie Fjeld, the association’s secretary general.
In the beginning, she said, entrepreneurs and politicians were sceptical, fearing properties near the saunas might lose value as a result.
“But now they all beg us to come to their new building projects because this is something they want,” she said. “You could say the tables have turned.”
Currently the water temperature is about 14C but in the winter it dips to zero and in the summer it gets up to 20C. “A lot of people I talk to say the saunas have made Oslo much cooler and made it the city they want to live in. Part of what makes Oslo great.”

More Anglo Saxon views on European sauna and bathing culture. The Daily Telegraph (Jul. 19):
'As a Briton, I feel I have much in common with my Scandinavian cousins: an endurance of long, cold, grey winters; a love of thrillers; a passion for wild swimming and saunas. In the course of researching two books on sauna culture, I’ve spent years sweating it out around Estonian lakes, and in hotboxes on windswept Norwegian archipelagos. Generally, when enjoying these activities I’ve been wearing a swimsuit – and this is where any similarities to our Nordic neighbours end.
...
Through my work, on research trips around Northern European cultures where nude bathing is the norm, I have had to confront my body issues; I have been in situations where being the only swim-suited one feels out of place. I have had to dig deep not to be the stereotypical British prude. I’ve been told to remove my sarong in a 200-person naked sauna event in the Netherlands, and come a cropper in a smoke sauna in southern Estonia where no-one ever wears clothes.
...
Sauna culture is playing into it too, as quirky horseboxes, pop-up tents and cosy barrel saunas provide places to sweat on beaches, lakes and rivers everywhere from Crieff to Cardiff. In the nine months I spent travelling around the country, researching these new hotspots and sharing the bench with athletes and recovering addicts, builders, barristers, mums and teens and pensioners, I came up close to the complex relationship the British have with our own – and other peoples’ – bodies. I met bathers who wear wetsuits, leggings and sweatshirts in the sauna – anything rather than nothing – and I’ve been to “clothing optional” sessions where everyone is naked. Often these are started by the community and evolve organically'.

Detours

Hotspring(break)
Another lengthy posting on the European soaking and saunaing scene, topical and all.

Totally on-topic to start off with.
Bert from 23b~log hotspring has been visiting a number of free Bulgarian soaks.
  • Bedenski Bana, Smolyan (Apr. 25), this time round the highest score from Bert:
'This would gain perfect score if not for the closeness to the main road and slight trashiness'.
'Low temperature but very appealing surroundings: Come visit in summertime picknick'n'dip'.
'Maybe the low key environment makes this not the most conducive of options in Velingrad. Solid option nonetheless'.
'... if you don't mind sulfurous hot springs, this is well worth a small detour especially if you're planing on using the ferry in Svishtov'.
Also on the visited menu (May 25), Strand Livada de Bihor, Oradea (Romania), a thermal pool / campsite :
'An excellent and affordable option caravan travelers looking for hot spring relaxation time. Wonderfully accommodating hosts and neighbors'.

Wanderlush yet again updates (Apr. 15) her article on Tbilisi's sulfur baths, all hot spring sourced.

Hide_onsen_packer has posted a spate of entries on Europe, in Japanese. Hungary, Slovakia, Spain and Germany.

Already slightly shifting away from hot springs, we need to mention Wandering Carol again (Mar. 25), this time while visiting Vichy, central France. And her experience:

'If you do want to travel to Vichy, France, and are interested in the wonderful culture of the old-fashioned French spa, what you need are tips about the Vichy springs. The spring water is the raison d’être for this gracious, slightly-faded town in the Auvergne region of France.
...
Out of 12 Vichy springs altogether, 6 are available at the Halls des Source for drinking (the other 6 have been closed or lost), and it’s here where the social status lines of Vichy spa-goers are firmly drawn.
On one hand you have the Serious Spa Goer who comes to Vichy to cure. On the other hand is the dreaded category of fly-by-night water drinkers, the Spa Tourist.
...
The next day we skipped happily (okay, Mark wasn’t skipping) over to the Hall des Sources only to learn that without a special key card you can’t enter the serious side of the Vichy springs drinking hall, the side for professional drinkers.
...
Luckily, French spa rules are no match for two people with very long arms, so Mark and I learned to enter the public side where the tourists go and simply reach around the barrier to fill our cups with the heavy duty thermal springs such as Hôpital, Chomel or Grande Grille.
...
I sidled around Mark, reached around the barrier and filled my plastic cup with some comforting Grande Grille spring water. And I got caught.
A Frenchman hustled up to me and started shouting non! non! non! non! and rubbing his stomach, miming that without a doctor’s prescription I was about to a) either have a baby immediately or b) become dramatically and violently ill'.
It's quite odd how French hot spring and wellness culture seems so outdated. With these standards of hospitality, it's no wonder foreigners are hardly interested, nor do these appeal to the younger generations, French or otherwise.

Sip
Sauna culture then. In the traditional sense.
BBC head over to Estonia (May 16) to look into the local smoke sauna culture:
'After almost nine years in Estonia, I've been to more saunas than I can count, though never to a smoke sauna. I wasn't worried about the heat or the nudity. Even the idea of a cold plunge in between sweating sessions was exhilarating. It was this "soul" of the smoke sauna that made me feel a bit nervous.
...
Between sweating sessions, I relax in the cosy break room in front of a wood-burning stove. In what can only be described as half history lesson, half guided meditation, Veeroja talks about Võromaa's smoke sauna traditions while I sip hot tea and cold maple sap harvested from the trees tapped outside. As I have not once glanced at my phone, I have lost all sense of time'.

Over the past week I have been deeply immersed in Finnish sauna culture. Living in a beautiful log cabin beside the frozen Lake Näsijärvi, drinking in the silence and snowy views.
My cabin had its own sauna, in fact there were more saunas than cabins to sleep in, a beautiful if a little exuberant ratio. The smoke sauna was less than 50 meters away that when fired up, offered such a deeply penetrating warmth I really could have stayed forever, or at least until I needed the next round of avanto… before repeating, repeating and repeating.
Sauna culture is more than just a tradition—it’s a tightly knit community where everyone is connected. I decided sauna on this level is perhaps not the usual 6 degrees of separation but perhaps 1, or 2 at the most. From my Scottish shoreline home I’ve been inspired through the lens of social media, and for once I find this world is truly real, which feels more than a little magical. I met sauna shamans, sauna healers, sauna hosts, sauna builders, sauna geeks, stove builders, fire starters and many, many, many sauna lovers, saunavores and saunapaths!
I almost lost count of how sauna benches I sat on (it was 18 btw) but its not really about the number, its about the love and enthusiasm for learning and sharing that I found on these benches. A huge thank you to Wendy & Mika of @SaunaWave and @niktorrens for organising such enriching experiences.
As I continue to learn and grow, I’m excited to share more insights from my journey with you all.
I will share more over the next few weeks, there is so much more to share as I learn more and develop. As always there is so much more behind the little sauna that sits on Edinburghs shoreline, but it all started with a girl, a big dream and a whole lot of love - lets do this!
Sauna on, my friends! Let’s keep the love for sauna culture alive and thriving. Are you ready to join me on this journey?

Note, apparently Ireland counts as British.
Also note that the British sauna culture is umm British ...?
In the process of looking into more info, I came across the instagram account of Emma O'Kelly:
'Writer
Sauna fan
Freelance journalist
Author of The Sauna, The Power of Deep Heat'
In the post
'Strip or not to Strip?
there are some comments which seek to answer and or explain to some extent the Britishness:
'emmaeokelly
@jkfrej I agree with you. It took me a while to be comfortable being naked as it’s not my cultural norm - it IS much more healthy and hygienic but it’s a big mindset shift for Brits.
...
For me, I sauna without swimwear whenever I can. Most often here in the UK that means a wrapped towel. From my experience in Germany, the important thing is that the textile free zone starts before the sauna room itself - everyone can shower their full body. This is the greatest downside of many seaside saunas - there isn’t anywhere you can shower naked. Often there’s not even a place to change so people are wearing a swimsuit they’ve travelled in. Even in indoor venues it’s rare to see a cubicle shower near to the sauna. Permitted nudity is just so practical!
A recap of the Sauna Summit day can be found here.

saunawave (in London):

Even Germany signals a changing sauna culture.
From Welt.de (May 3) a German language article on how sauna / wellness culture in Germany is getting ever so popular especially with the younger generations:
'Zum Abschalten zu zweit, zum Quatschen mit Freunden, sogar für Flirts treffen sich junge Großstädter vermehrt in Thermen. Woher kommt die Begeisterung, stundenlang in einer handyfreien Zone zu entspannen? Versuch einer Erklärung'.
Concerning the new Vabali Wellnessoase near Düsseldorf:
Appearances
Part II
In Belgium though the new sauna culture is still very open to fluctuation.
Belgium's Saunavereniging (Apr. 12) with a public(?) message:
'In Belgium, 'bathing suit' spa days and bathing suit areas in a public wellness centers seem to gain popularity. And, rumor has it that the same counts for the Netherlands Although we love to welcome everyone who wants to spend a wonderful time in our saunas and thermal baths, with or without bathing suit, we keep encouraging without for the sauna experience itself, as it facilitates the body's ability to sweat and detoxify Did you know that people typically wear towels or robes for personal comfort outside the sauna, such as in communal areas or during sweat session breaks? This practice helps maintain modesty and ensures everyone feels at ease while enjoying the other amenities of the spa or sauna facility In other words: even in a nude area, most people remain covered for 90% of the time. The choice, of course, is always up to you!
Study case: Saunate near Gent. From their Facebook account, the announcement (May 23) that now Wednesdays and Saturdays are clothingoptional instead of textile free. Comments explain: that doesn't automatically mean that everyone feels comfortable ....

The meaning of sauna rules?
In Austria a judicial case has moved forward. Kleinezeitung (Mar. 23) reports on a case before the judge concerning 3 men who entered the sauna clothed, in contradiction to the household rules of stated sauna. This then lead to a scuffle with other sauna visitors it seems and that's why a judge needs to settle the rights from the wrongs.

Finally (nearly) back to soaking, with an insta posting from Fromrusttoroadtrip (May 12):
'What we love so much about hot springs is their variety.
No two are the same temperature, or have the same mineral content, or possess the same healing properties. Each one is uniquely wonderful.
Some are warm, some are boiling hot and some are cold. Some are blue, or green, yellow, orange or clear. Some smell like eggs. Others smell like fresh spring water and mountain air. Some are gravelly, sandy, muddy or filled with clay. Some are natural, and some man-made.
Most of them are hiding at the end of a long, exciting treasure hunt.
But this one in the south of Spain was a true stunner, although more well-known than most we visit. Bubbling up from the bed of a vast dried-up lake is the largest pool of thermal water we’ve ever had the pleasure to swim in.
...
A true window of wild bliss.
...
🛑✋If you know it please don’t name it. This hot spring like many others in Spain is at risk of becoming overwhelmed with visitors. We want to share stories and post beautiful photos but we don’t want to contribute to overtourism, hence why we don’t share the exact location. As always bathe, enjoy and share responsibly 💙'

Not naming, but hinting. It's not Iceland (post upcoming?):

The best way to start your day 💙🤍 good morning everyone, everywhere..

#filmphotography #35mm #camera #nikon #hotsprings #sunset
I'd very much like to add much more topical info concerning Europe's hot springs, but alas there's little forthcoming.

Worldthermalsprings (Mar. 16) is flying through many Portugese and French hot springs in the last few weeks. Not only are the number of soaks per day impressive, they also are able to enter many of the facilities geared up for medically supervised soaking. An exception from Rennes-les-Bains (Languedoc):

Путешествие по термам Франции, Пиренеи. RENNES LES THERMES.
More popularity for Bath's Roman (UK) hot springs complex. Bath Newsroom (Mar. 17)
'Figures released today by the Association for Leading Visitor Attractions (ALVA) show that the Roman Baths & Pump Room was the 28th most-visited attraction in the UK in 2022, up from 51st in 2021.
The historic attraction welcomed 851,854 visitors during 2022, compared to 351,655 in 2021. The Roman Baths was the second most-visited attraction in the South West, after Stonehenge.
Councillor Kevin Guy, Leader of Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “These figures represent a welcome recovery for the Roman Baths and demonstrate the significance of Bath within the UK tourism industry. To be 28th in a list of such amazing visitor attractions is a tremendous achievement and I am delighted that so many people chose Bath and the Roman Baths as the place to create special memories with their friends and families'.
The Independent (Feb. 25) continues:
'Bath may have been recognised by Unesco as one of Europe’s great spa towns but it is not all about therapeutic soaks. Back in Georgian times, people simply thought that promenading and socialising here would enhance their wellbeing. Bath authorities say they want the city to become the UK’s premier destination for wellness [it already is] and are engaging with architects to reimagine public spaces. With its first wellbeing festival [Re:Balance] looking like a success, the city promises visitors plenty to smile about'.
Mytravelintuscany (Mar. 1) presents an overview of all free and wild hot springs of Tuscany, Italy: six in total.
Not in Tuscany:

🇬🇧below
Was will man mehr. 💥
Natural hot springs, mountains, forests and our little home on wheels. Nothing to ask for. 💥
Tierrassinfronteras (Mar. 13) has an article on the Baños de Somogil in Murcia (Spain). A translated snippet:
'The Baños de Somogil are one of the few thermal and natural places that exist in Murcia. It is important to know that despite the fact that the second pool enjoys the filtration of this type of water, it is not absolutely hot, but warm to cold.
This thermal characteristic makes it one more incentive to visit the place and enjoy discovering the difference in temperature between the two pools. I personally thought it was a wonderful place to bathe and above all curious'.
More info (also translated):
'Two streams of water converge in the pool: the Hondares stream, from its remote source, provides one of the currents, the colder and more superficial one; and, hand in hand with this current, another emerges, subterranean and hot. born from the depths of an aquifer that maintains a constant temperature of 26º. The access of this current is produced by a fault in the limestone rock. In this way, it is possible to enjoy an amazing natural spa with its two streams of water, one cold and the other hot, outdoors and in an environment of great beauty'.

Warmer and sunnier. And also in Spain:

🌞🫧
Everettpotter (Feb. 23) notes how European spa's are seeking to attract an American clientèle.
'Americans who do travel to experience European spas will discover a world with centuries – even millennia – of tradition, and plenty of science behind the relaxing waters and treatments. The spas of Europe provide their guests with several different levels of treatment and care, falling in the categories of wellness, health and medical.
...
Another keynote speaker [for European Spa Association annual congress in Slovakia] was North American journalist and wellness travel consultant Laura Powell, who told delegates that the pandemic ushered in a new era for the wellness industry in North America. As many people started suffering the effects of chronic stress, they realized that they needed to be more proactive about their health and wellness habits. As a result, wellness tourism skyrocketed, and people started vacationing specifically for their health (both physical and mental).
Additionally, for some time, people in the United States in particular have been fed up with a health care system that is expensive and not open to alternative therapies. Therefore, there is a growing market open to looking at overseas destinations to help cure what ails them – and at more affordable prices, to boot'.
Plunged
The Economist (Mar. 16) goes out of it's way to highlight what they believe is Britain's newest fad. Public baths are out (apparently) and community sauna's are in:
'Gabrielle Reason of the British Sauna Society reckons there are now 53 “authentic saunas” across Britain, a number which has doubled every year since 2018. Half of them are on the coast, where visitors can plunge into the sea and then return to the heat'.

Very authentic (from Finland):

Tack för en magisk firande kära vänner och speciellt @harscecilia & @taigatrash
Gott nytt år allihopa, önskar det kommer med många gemensamma äventyrer!
Oddish news (BBC, Mar. 17) concerning the Turkish baths of Harrogate (UK):
'Naked bathing has been banned at Harrogate's famous Turkish Baths after an incident of inappropriate behaviour was reported to police.
The historic baths on Parliament Street holds single-sex sessions for men and women where swimwear is optional.
Harrogate Borough Council, which runs the baths, said swimwear must now be worn at all times until further notice.
...
The Turkish Baths is housed in a Grade II-listed building, which has been described as "the most fully-restored" Turkish bath in Britain.
It opened in 1897 and has been managed by the council since the late 1990s'.
It's a pity no details are included.
It seems at odds that whole nations in Europe have no issues concerning the swimwear-free side of things (see following), let alone there being incidents (though this does seem more commonplace in swimwear-compulsory places ...).
Also note that same council had previously planned to shelve the swimwear-free sessions last year (BBC, Apr. 21) citing:
'However, covering up could be made compulsory because the authority said it would reflect greater "equality" in the modern world'.

Maybe UK is just behind the curve when it comes to human evolution.

On what seems the other side of the universe, German swimmers / bathers in public facilties are slowly arriving in the 21st century in which we all are equal.
A few cities have already come around to the conclusion that requiring all-others-but-men to dress up more than what is allowed for males is inherently discrimination.
Berlin now follows, so reports Taz (Mar. 8):
'In Berlins öffentlichen Bädern darf „oben ohne“ geschwommen werden. Für Sommer- wie Hallenbäder gilt das gleichermaßen. Das teilte die Pressestelle der Berliner Bäder-Betriebe (BBB) am Dienstag auf taz-Anfrage mit. Dass die Nachricht gerade jetzt publik wird, darf man als Hommage an den Frauentag am 8. März verstehen, der in der Hauptstadt ein gesetzlicher Feiertag ist'.
Apparently it was never against the rules, but society failed to observe these rights to equality; now all are in know, especially authorities.
For some unknown reason the news went worldwide, giving the chance to media to inform their own citizens, oblivious to this kind of progress. For instance, BBC (Mar. 9):
'Foreign visitors to Germany are often surprised - and sometimes downright disconcerted - by the sight of naked Germans frolicking in its lakes, snoring in its parks, or sweating in its saunas'.
Kudo's to the lady who was brave enough to bring this to the attention of authorities and put up with the hassle. And still waiting for apology. And currently is being attacked by those opposed (rbb24):
'Die "Oben-ohne"-Aktivistin Lotte Mies ist eigenen Angaben zufolge Anfeindungen und Drohungen ausgesetzt. Unter anderem drohten ihr Menschen in persönlichen Nachrichten mit Vergewaltigung ...'.

Finally, Businessinsider (Mar. 15) seems to have found content which might interest their readers and filed under careers:
'Felix Kühn manages the sauna at a "textile-free" spa in Berlin, Germany.
This means guests must be naked to access its pool and sauna'.
Thnx for the explanation.
The article though is quite sensible / informative:
'It took two weeks for me to get used to nudity – not with the guests in the sauna, but with my colleagues as we changed in front of each other.
But nudity is not a big deal here, especially as there are nude beaches in East Germany. My parents come from there, so I know that cultural identity. It's just natural and we approach each other as human beings: "This is my body, this is your body," we think.
It's enjoyable to be around each other without any judgment. It's totally normal for me'.
